How important sleep is
Most of us enjoy a good night’s sleep, but we may not realize just how important sleep is. Everyone knows that without sleep for a night or two, a person may find it hard to think well. After three nights without sleep you might start t
o see things, and you begin to lose your sense of reality. In experiments, rats which are not allowed to sleep can actually die, which seems to prove that sleep must be very important. We know that children who do not sleep enough can fail to grow properly, growth hormones can be active while the body is asleep. Lack of sleep may also damage the immune system, so you fall ill more often. Scientists don’t know exactly what sleep is for and why humans need so much of it, but they believe it gives the body a chance to repair muscles and replace cells. It may also give the brain the opportunity to organize memory, and some experts believe that dreams could help in this process. The brain also needs to rest, so sleep gives the brain a chance to “recharge” its batteries. Obviously, sleep must also be related to the fact that there are hours of darkness when our activity is limited. Another possible reason for sleeping is that if we didn’t sleep and save some energy, we would have to eat a lot more food.
