The World in 2030
Predict Human Development Index (HDI) for the year 2030
Gather into a team (no more than 5 people), send the list to your teaching assistant (you can use Telegram), he/she will assign you a variant.

You will be working only with countries in particular regions, as defined by the World Bank, by your variant number:
1: EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC
2: EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA
3: LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
4: MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA + NORTH AMERICA + SOUTH ASIA
5: SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Find the data for the indicators deed to compute HDI for years 1990 - 2015. Use the official sources, link to them in your report.
Find the HDI index for years 1990-2015. Use the official sources, link to them in your report.
Delete the countries for which HDI is not available from the UNDP.
Combine the data into an Excel workbook. It would make you life tremendously easier, if you create a sheet for each indicator, organised so that a cell with particular coordinates (e.g . E45) refers to the same year for the same country in each sheet.
For each country predict the indicators for years 2016-2030 via linear trend
Use the predicted indicator values to predict the HDI for years 2016-2030
Produce two maps showing the HDI for you countries in 2015 and 2030. You may use either a continuous color scheme (example), or split the HDI values into discrete intervals and color each with a distinct color (example)
You may use Excel maps (pro: it’s automed, pro: it will allow you to easily do Bonus I; con: you’ll need Windows; con: you’ll need to read the manual)
You may use a website such as https://mapchart.net/ (pro: easy to get started; con: you’ll need to color the countries manually)
Send the teaching assistant both the map image and the Excel file used to produce it.
Bonus I (worth 3 points)
Produce a video showing the HDI value for each country by year (see the example).
Bonus II (worth 2 points)
Compute predictions for 1990-2015 for indicators
Use the predictions for indices to compute prediction for the HDI
Compute the R^2 for the indices prediction. For each country compute the average of the R^2 across the indicators
Compute the MSE for the HDI predictions
Plot the MSE for the HDI predictions as a function of the mean R^2 of the indicators
Hints
The data is at http://hdr.undp.org/en/data. The formatting of the exported data is quite depressing, welcome to the real world.
You may want to split up so that each team member preprocess the data and makes predictions for his own indicator
Pay attention that the countries available are a bit different for each indicator - you don’t need those for which there is no HDI computed by the UNDP

You may want to use “Find&Replace;” to get rid of “aaa” and alike
The data in .csv files uses “.” for floating point number, while Russian Excel uses “,”. There is an option to handle it when splitting the data into columns:
When writing the formula for predictions, clever use of “$” in cell references will allow you to type the formula only once, then “drag” it for all countries and years
Pay attention that for some countries for some indicators the data is available from a year later than 1960 - you’ll probably need to manually adjust the prediction formulas.
