1. You are the Transport Manager of a large multi-modal freight organisation and have
been asked by your Managing Director (MD) to produce a paper that the MD intends
to deliver to the Board.
In particular, it must specifically explain the principle similarities and d
ifferences
between the Rail and Air modes when moving freight consignments.
In addition, the MD has requested that you include in your comparisons an
assessment of the environmental impact of Rail and Air freight movements, typical
operational problems both of these modes face, and their ability to manage, in cases
of fluctuation in demand.
2. The Managing Director has now presented your paper (from Assignment One) and
the Board is now interested in alternatives to Rail and Air movements.
Firstly, the Board has asked for clarification of what Strategic and Tactical level
planning may be necessary in order to construct and open a new Road-Sea inter-
modal hub and what impact ISO containers
