NEW WORKING WEEK FOR MANAGEMENT
If European industry wants to be as efficient as the Japanese, then managers should work longer hours, go to the office on Saturday mornings and take only half their annual holiday. This advice was given to the delegates attending the 13th annual Congress of the European Association of Personnel Management in London this week by Professor Jean-Pierre Lehmann of the National Institute for Labor Studies. According to Dr. Lehmann Europe's declining level of productivity should be stopped, Europe can be made wealthier and happier. This can be achieved by the introduction of a new working week for management at all levels. Dr. Lehmann thinks that managers should set an example and be at their work place from 8 am to 6 pm, with at least half a day on Saturday. Annual holidays will have to be made similar to the American norm of two weeks. On the need of managers to spend time with their families, Dr. Lehmann said, "One can still spend a very good Saturday afternoon and Sunday with the family."
Dr. Lehmann accepts that many smaller, more dynamic companies are already working in this way and says that it is the bigger corporations that he is criticizing. He thinks European business can flourish and compete successfully.
