PYATIGORSK
Pyatigorsk is located at mineral sources of the mount Mashuk. It is impossible to say when people started to use local healing waters. There is an evidence from some Arab traveler who visited town Majar in the Golden Horde in 1334. According to him, there was a source of hot water nearby famous for its healing force.
In Russia the first documented reference of the source appeared in XVII century. In the next age, Peter the Great ordered to explore qualities of the water. By the late XVIII century, some more sources were founded in the area. In 1780, a fort was built on the place to evolve Pyatigorsk. Soldiers of the garrison had to drink the water and the doctors began to study results of such treatment.
The civil settlement appeared with first houses built in the early XIX to let them visiting patients. Although, it was not easy to get to the source, fame of the curative waters attracted lots of people and the new town of houses-hotels grew rapidly. The growing number of resorts visitors made the Russian government pay attention to development of the region. By the middle XIX century, Pyatigorsk became the starting point to journey about the Northern Caucasus. Location of the town in the very middle of Caucasian resorts with mineral sources attracted more and more visitors there. Their money encouraged development of Pyatigorsk. By 1879, the number of residents reached nine thousand.
Local industry was hardly worth talking about. The main occupation of the residents was to provide various services to visitors and to let houses to them. By the end of the century, the railway went through the town, increasing the number of water-drinkers even further. In 1902, 9470 people visited Pyatigorsk.
In 1863, the Russian Balneology Society was established. One of its goals was to research the Caucasian mineral sources.
