The emergence of Zionism was preceded by many phenomena and processes that together form a certain microcosm. However, this microcosm was not isolated from the immeasurably larger outside world. As socio-economic and political issues in European countries intensified, and anti-Semitism grew, the ideology of the Jewish national movement evolved. Religious beliefs took a backseat to a more political basis, with the emergence of political Zionism. This shift was a response to new historical realities, such as the imperialist struggles of states. Herzl's plan aimed to integrate Zionism into international politics, and it was political Zionism that ultimately facilitated the task of national revival.
The middle and petty bourgeoisie, along with working Jews, provided social support for Zionism. These groups faced significant discrimination and were particularly affected by anti-Semitism.
