Putin’s Game of Shadows
"There are more than ten million Germans living in two states located outside our borders... There can be no doubt that the political separation from the Reich should not result in depriving them of their rights, more precisely, the fundamental right to self-determination. For a world power it is unbearable to be aware that our brothers by race that support us, are exposed to cruel persecutions and tortures for their desire to be together with the nation that shares their fate. It is in the interests of the German Reich to protect these Germans who live along our borders, who are unable to defend their own political and spiritual freedoms"
February 20, 1938
Adolf Hitler
Above is a famous excerpt from Hitler’s speech about “freeing” the German speaking Austrians along the borders in order to justify claiming ethnic German lands in 1938. After reading the excerpt above, change the words Germans to Russians, and the Third Reich to Russian Federation. Does this sound familiar to you? It is precisely what is happening in Ukraine. Even though Putin’s intentions maybe different, his methods are very similar to those that Hitler used when he invaded Austria and continued along to invade further East. It is really hard and hurting to admit, but if 70 years ago Hitler would know that Russians started a war against Ukrainians, and Germans would be standing by and cheering along, he would not be entirely wrong to claim that in the end the Third Reich won WWII.
The conflict in southeastern Ukraine is not a usual type of war. It is an uncommon type of warfare, Russians are using informational and cyber warfare, insurgency, terrorism and militants in order to escalate and keep the conflict. Why is Putin playing games with fire? Why did he break a major security memorandum in Budapest from 1994 and at what price did he put world security system in danger? What is his plan and how is Russia going to act next? Is it going to start another Cold War or worse? Why Russia needs Crimea and will they attempt to occupy the Eastern region of Ukraine?
Today these questions try to answer millions of people worldwide. All the major media outlets have been following very closely the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. I will attempt to answer these questions, shed the light on what is happening in Ukraine and how to understand it.
How Political Propaganda Experts Fool People from Donbass
Also there is a heavy informational war going on between Russia and Ukraine. It is unheard of to see the kind of propaganda that is being shown on TV and how facts are being changed without any objective arguments and critical thinking. Russian media have demonized the Ukrainian nationalist movement and organizations (which were responsible for overthrowing the dictatorship) to the point where Russian mass media is calling them “extremists, terrorists, Russophobes, and fashists” without any legitimate proof, referral to sources, etc.
Many people write about the information war against Ukraine, which caused much real bloody shed, about the inflammatory role of Russian television, which perpetuates clashes between the east and west of the country. Of course, the role of television is great, but it is only part of a carefully prepared information campaign to foment the war.
Media is an important technological tool in this case, but not the only one. For example, there is a widely used technology - spreading rumors. First, hearing it must discredit the rival candidate in the voters eyes, and secondly, fall under their expectations. I will try to explain how its done in conventional example. Suppose our rival candidate is the incumbent mayor, he is 40 years old and single. We invent a rumor that he is not married because he is homosexual (anti-gay attitudes of our voters we know ahead of time). Then we hire people to spread rumors (or in this case regular agitators). Then compose dialogues, which they pronounce loudly in public places (buses, bus stops, shops, smoking areas, etc.), so that everyone around them could hear it.
The content is sounds something like this:
- You know, the mayor of ours is a homosexual!
- No way, are you serious!
- Yes, yes, and have you wondered why he is still not married? His chauffeur is my brother's friend. So he talks about him stuff that ears turn red from shame. Every evening he secretly goes to some underground gay club and hangs out there until morning.
- O wow! And people do not even know about it...
Such dialogues are repeated many times. People who "accidentally" get to hear them, pick a theme and start the rumor spread among their friends, not even imagining how it all started. So, you see, after a while, the whole city says the mayor is a secret homosexual. In the elections, respectively, he loses a significant percentage of votes.
In Eastern Ukraine (Donbass Region), now there a lot of rumors circulating about the horror stories, the horrors that supposedly await its population under the new Ukrainian authorities. Here, for example, what writes in his blog a Donetsk resident:
"Rumors say one absurd bigger than the other. And the more ridiculous and absurd the rumor is, the more people believe it. They say that everyone is going to be sent to concentration camps. Separate men, women and children will go to a different place. At the camps trustworthiness will have to be verified, knowledge of a biography and the anthem of Stepan Bandera. The crematorium is close by just in case. Men will be sent to war, children are going to be organ donors for the U.S. citizens, and women will be burned. Many believe it!"
It is difficult to imagine that all of this is rather offensive nonsense that is provoking hatred between residents of Donbass and other parts of Ukraine, spreading so spontaneously and chaotic. It’s no coincidence that immediately after the revolution, some Ukrainian political strategists that were close to the Kremlin have called for network professionals in order to conduct “campaigns” in Ukraine. I think anti-Ukrainian rumors are spread more and more in order to bring the residents of Donbass a mass psychosis, largely prepared by Russian specialists in information wars. Unlike TV propagandists they remain in the shadows, but they are not less guilty for the bloodshed in Donbass.
