In this essay I am going to interpret Aristotle’s understanding of role of virtue in human happiness. More precisely, I am aiming at outlining the condition which is required for obtaining happiness. I will also try to distinguish between the concepts of virtue, presented in Nicomachean Ethics and talk about Aristotle’s perception of best life.
As far as the concept of best life is concerned, it is undeniably intertwined with eudaimonia. In Book 10 of Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle specifies that one of the inherent parts of happiness is pleasure and the virtue which corresponds to wisdom (contemplation) is the most pleasurable one. Furthermore, it is highlighted that “the self-sufficiency that is spoken of must belong most to the contemplative activity”. In addition to that Aristotle indicates that “happiness is thought to depend on leisure” and then claims contemplative activity to be infinitely ongoing, “since we can contemplate truth more continuously than we can do anything”. As maintained by Nicomachean Ethics, those who are more capable of contemplation, are prone to be happier, as the ability to contemplate is invaluable in itself and embodies eudaimonia. «Happiness extends, then, just so far as contemplation does, and those to whom contemplation fully belongs are more truly happy».
Essay on the topic: “(1) With reference to Book 1, chapters 1-9, 13, Book 2, chapters 1 and 6, Book 10, chapters7-8, write an essay on the role of virtue in human happiness in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. You must discuss the following questions in your essay: (1) What is the necessary condition for human happiness, according to Aristotle? (2) What does Aristotle mean by virtue and a virtuous life? On what basis does Aristotle make his distinction between the moral and intellectual virtues? (3) What is the best life (not simply the good life) according to the account given in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics? In answering this part of the essay topic, select a brief quotation from Aristotle’s text and provide an interpretation of it to illustrate how Aristotle defends his argument for the best and happiest life. (You must indicate from which book and which chapter of the Nicomachean Ethics the quotation is taken.) In your conclusion, state why Aristotle’s theory of the best life is in harmony with the conception of virtue in Books 1 and 2, or whether it is a departure and reversal of the theory.”
