The four basic market freedoms have been legally guaranteed since 1986 and they stated that goods, services, capital and people can move without restrictions within the European Union (hereinafter referred to as EU). At this point, most EU citizens consider these four freedoms, along with peace on the continent, to be Europe's greatest achievement. These freedoms are the cornerstones of the European single market.
They help to strengthen intra-EU trade. For example, two thirds of all manufactured products in the EU are exported to other EU countries. Since the EU is the largest single market in the world, this free exchange has a positive impact on overall welfare. Research shows that the EU's gross domestic product (GDP) has grown by several percentage points thanks to the Single Market.
