Nowadays the interaction of English and Spanish is of immense interest due to the expanding contact between the two languages and cultural contacts between the two nations. Over the last two centuries English has gained the status of a language of international communication. It is a well-known fact that English is an official language of almost 60 sovereign states, the most commonly spoken language in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, and a widely spoken language in countries in the Caribbean, Africa, and South Asia. Moreover, it is an official language of the United Nations, of the European Union, and of many other world and regional international organizations. However, Spanish is gaining authority to become an international language alongside with English as it has an extensive amount of native speakers. Spanish has overtaken English in this regard; the Hispanics is spreading all over the world and a vast number of Spanish words are being borrowed into other languages.
A word is called borrowed if, when borrowed, it retains both its meaning and the sound features. As a result of phonological substitution, hybrid words may arise, which are formed partly from the native, partly from foreign material [Arakin 1968: 127]. With the case of calque or loan translation, only the general structure of the compound word and its meaning are transferred. The difference between actual borrowings and calque is that all foreign morphemes and the meaning of the word remain and only the sound features change under the influence of the borrowing language.
Borrowed words can change phonetically in accordance with the norms of the borrowing language, sometimes phonological substitution arises.
The purpose of this course work is to study the development of language relations in the interaction of Spanish and English, their lexical and semantic peculiarities, the current functioning of borrowed words, transformations in accordance with the phonetic and grammatical lexical norms.
According to the purpose, the following objectives are to be distinguished:
1) To consider the concept of linguistic borrowing;
2) To consider a number of classifications of borrowed vocabulary;
3) To analyze and determine the historical period of assimilation of Spanish borrowings in the English language;
4) To give a comparative historical analysis of borrowings by morphological affiliation;
5) To describe the methods of borrowing;
6) To look at word-formation productivity and polysemy of loan words, peculiarities of their use in the modern English.
