1. Reluctantly, she remembered her rapt, intent face which clearly showed Jim that she thought him the most intelligent man on earth, and was honoured and grateful just to be in his presence.
2. For a moment, Plum wished that Jim could see her sitting in the back of the maroon chauffeur-driven Rolls, as it glided through New York. Then, exasperated, she wondered why she permanently felt she needed to prove herself to him.
3. After the long overnight flight, she desperately needed a bath and a sleep. But the secretary told her about some interviews. “The reporter from the Bulletin couldn’t make it any other time – that’s important coverage. Sorry. I warned you I’d arranged a busy schedule.”
4. By a supreme exertion of will, with reeling brain and eyes that ached so that he could not keep them open, he managed to get out of bed, only to be left stranded by his senses upon the table.
5. “We offer you forty dollars for all serial rights in your story”. Teresa slowly spelled out, “provided you allow us to make the alterations suggested”.
6. Hack-work could be put aside. For that matter, it had been wasted time, for it hadn’t brought him a dollar.
7. A great temptation seized her. In an insistent way she had caught glimpses of the large, easy-going side of his nature, and she felt sure, if she asked him to drop writing, he would grant her wish.
8. Jenny had also experienced bad luck: her grant had been cancelled for some reason concerning her father’s income tax ceiling, and she had been obliged to leave the college before finishing her final year.
9. It took him several weeks to get used to a system that relied solely on self-discipline, and by the end of the term his father was threatening that unless he buckled down, he would stop his allowance and bring him back home to do a good day’s work.
10. At the end of the first year Keith had little to show for the twelve months he had spent at the university, other than a small group of friends who, like him, were determined to change the system to benefit the majority just as soon as they went down.
11. He wastes his time over writing, trying to accomplish what geniuses and rare men with college education sometimes accomplish.
12. Then by what right did Martin emerge, as he had so recenlty emerged from his rag-time and working-class songs, and pass judgement on the world’s music?
13. She saw him leave the house with his overcoat and return without it, though the day was chilly and raw, and promptly she saw his cheeks fill out slightly and the fire of hunger leave his eyes.
14. Well, there was nothing left to do but kill the manager and burn down the laundry.
15. After that visit Maria dropped back into her old obscurity and he began to notice the respectful manner in which he was regarded by the neighbourhood.
16. On the other hand, he was encouraged with his success. The climb had been easier than he expected.
17. At the intersection of West Broadway and Chambers, Plum turned left. Almost immediately the wind eased, although it was still gusty.
18. She felt uneasy, knowing that the ring was lying in her coat pocket, not safely attached to anything, or stuck on a finger.
19. At the Laura Ashley shop Plum bought some purple gloves and a matching woollen muffler. She would be glad when she’d left this city and wouldn’t feel obliged to hide it.
20. The lawyer began by explaining to the assembled would-be beneficiaries that the contents of the will had not been disclosed until six months after Mr. Lester’s death at his specific instruction.
21. At the end of the meal, after they all had congratulated Harriet on it, her dad had quietly said that in his honest opinion, the turkey had been too dry and the stuffing too moist.
22. He spent most of the next six months locked up in Canberra with Alan Rutledge as they prepared to launch the new paper early in the new year.
23. Everything ran late, from locating the offices to employing the best administrative staff.
24. When he finally emerged from Ben’s office it was pitch dark, and the receptionist had left. He fell into the car and told Sam to take him back to the hotel.
25. The following day Oakshott had been appointed to the board of Armstrong Communications at a salary of £10.000 a year, though his monthly check wasn’t always honoured on the first presentation.
26. Within days he began selecting which houses would be allowed to publish his manuscripts and distribute his magazines.
27. If you had read the document you would be only too aware of the penalties for failing to fulfill your financial obligations to us.

8. By twelve o’clock, with the sun pouring into the room, the heat became quite unbearable.
9. My head being heavy after two sleepless nights, I lay down and slept.
10. She opened the window and sat on the windowsill, with the spring sun shining full upon her.
11. The dinner being tasteless, I decided to have some sandwiches instead.
12. We found him waiting for us in the garden.
13. She averted her eyes each time she found herself being stared at.
14. She approached the door and pressed the bell with her heart beating fast.
15. Mother being very tired, we decided to take a taxi.
