Overview
The United Nations is an international organization. It is currently made up of 193 Member States. The UN has, as its primary responsibility, the maintenance of international peace and security.

The United Nations of organizations is made up of he United Nations Secretariat, the United Nations programmes and funds- such as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) – and the specialized agencies. The programmes, funds and agencies have their own governing. The programmes , funds and agencies have their own governing bodies and budgets, and set their own standards and guidelines. Together, they provide technical assistance and other forms of practical help in all areas of economic and social development.
Secretariat
(The Secretariat: It is an international staff working in duty stations around the world to carry out the diverse day-to-day work of the Organization. It services the other principle organs of the United Nations and administers the programmes and policies laid down by them. At its head is the Secretary-General, who is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a five-year, renewable term. The duties carried out by the Secretariat are as varied as the problems dealt with by the United Nations. These range from administering peacekeeping operations to mediating international disputes, from surveying economic and social trends and problems to preparing studies on human rights and sustainable development. Secretariat staff also inform the world’s communications media about the work of the United Nations; organize international conferences on issues of worldwide concern; and interpret speeches and translate documents into the Organization’s official languages. The Secretariat, one of the main organs of the UN, is organized along departmental lines, with each department or office having a distinct area of action and responsibility.
Offices and departments coordinate with each other to ensure cohesion as they carry out the day to day work of the Organization in offices and duty stations around the world.

Although the United Nations Secretariat, the executive arm of the organization, has some 43,000 employees worldwide, most of the strategic decisions are made by 80 or so senior officials. Headed by the secretary-general, the Secretariat plays key roles in agenda-setting for various deliberative UN organizations and manages global peace-keeping operations—including the UN's response to the Ebola outbreak. There is keen competition and string pulling among nations to win those upper level staff appointments.

The UN Secretariat is headed by the SYG and is the permanent organization responsible for the establishment, coordination, and administration of peacekeeping operations. Several secretariat departments headed by under secretary generals (USYGs) are involved in peace operations and may interface directly with the SYG's special representative to a specific peace operation

The Secretary-General is chief administrative officer of the Organization, appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council for a five-year, renewable term.
The September UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) resolution established a series of qualifying recommendations and attributes that the most suitable candidate should possess. The following criteria were classified in three sets, the first pertaining in a sense to professional skills, the second to political acceptance, and the third to public acceptance at a time when the UN wants to modernize its image:
UN and diplomatic-related experience
proven leadership;
managerial ability;
extensive international relations experience;
diplomatic and communications skills;
experience in the United Nations;
diplomatic record;
linguistic ability
Acceptability within UN system
acceptability to the five Permanent Members of the Security Council
likely to gain support from the Eastern European region as a whole
likely to gain domestic support
Acceptability to global public opinion at a time of key UN transformation
understanding and sensitivity to multicultural issues
