The study of language variation is an important part of sociolinguistics, to the extent that it requires reference to social factors.
It is natural that the English language is not used with uniformity in the British Isles and in Australia, in the USA and -in New Zealand, in Canada and in India, etc. The English language also has some peculiarities in Wales, Scot-land, in other parts of the British Isles and America. Is the nature of these vari-eties the same?
According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, varieties of Eng-lish include British English (including Irish English), American Eng-lish and Canadian English, Australian/New Zealand English (listed together by EB), India-Pakistan English (also listed together), and African Eng-lish (especially as spoken in South Africa) [4].
As we move across the country we experience not only changing land-scape and architecture but also a gradual change in the sounds we hear, in the accents and dialects that relate to the place in which they are spoken and to which they belong. This phonomenon is known as a dialect continuum. The terms accent and dialect are often used interchangeably, although in linguistic terms they refer to two different aspects of language variation.
