What does it mean to be a successful learner? Many think of the process of learning as something limited to the school curriculum, however, the acquisition of knowledge is a much more broad concept. Learning is not only about getting a degree, but it is also about our ability to get and process information regarding different aspects of life and developing new skills and knowledge. As Albert Einstein had said: “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” So how can we get our mind trained? Since we live in the century of informational accessibility and globalization, addressing the issue of responsible yet efficient acquisition of knowledge is becoming relevant. This essay intends to discuss the strategies to gain new knowledge, develop new skills, and evaluate the role of critical thinking in the process of learning.
To become a successful learner, an individual should be interested in what they learn. A better performance, which depends upon the memory and understanding can be improved by writing notes by hand and revising. Learning new skills or applying knowledge through practice helps to be reflective. A successful learner is also the one, who can think critically and has own opinion, which is expressed through questioning existing paradigms. Everyone has own understanding of what being a successful learner is. However, every successful learner has a strong will to learn more and more.
