The article “Aspects of imagery” is a chapter from the book of E. Tabakowska “Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation”. The text belongs to scientific style and formal register. This article is an overview of different approaches to the notion of imagery, which are presented diachronically.
First of all, the vocabulary proves that the register of the text is formal.
The text consists formal words, such as “tally”, “stance”, “ubiquity” and “tantamount”.
There is much of the vocabulary of French, Latin and, what is more, Greek origin: “evaluation”, “manifistation”, “phenomenon”, “aesthetic”.
In the whole text there are only 2 cases of “human” grammatical subjects. “Mikhail Bakhtin pointed those schort comings out to the critics”, “J.A.Cuddon states that many images are conveyed by figurative language Non-human subjects prevail in the text.
Passive constructions are used to sound impersonal. Impersonality is a marker of objectivity. While objectivity is a necessary condition of scientific text.
