INTERNAL PARASITES
1. Two main groups of worms are important internal parasites of stock: (a) Roundworms, (b) Flatworms, e.g. Liver Flukes, Tapeworms. One factor that both roundworms and flatworms have in common is that they spend part of their life cycle away from the host.
2. Stomach worms. The Barbers-pole worm (Haemonchus contortus) can be taken as an example. This worm sucks blood in the abomasums of sheep and calves. Animals which are heavily infected show symptoms that include loss of condition, anemia, diarrhea, weakness and possibly death. Female worms are about 1.3 cm long and can lay 100,000 or more eggs daily. These eggs pass out in the dung and under warm, moist conditions may produce infective larvae within 4 days. The larvae migrate to herbage and are eaten by the stock as they graze. Once in the abomasums or intestine they develop into adult worms. Cattle 6-18 months old can suffer from various worms.
2. Желудочные черви.
