In 1988, Armenia was an earthquake that caused massive destruction.

At the epicenter of the disaster shocks were observed up to 10 points. The area affected by the earthquake, had a radius of about 40 kilometers from the epicenter. In this area at that time there were about seven hundred thousand people. The tremors lasted for six days, there have been counted 367. The experts assess the extent of the disaster, reported that the amount of energy released from the Earth's crust is ten atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima. The total surface of the gap is equal to 37 kilometers, and its displacement amplitude was almost up to 170 cm.

Most affected by the disaster following locations: Leninakan, Spitak, Kirovokan, Stepanavan and others. The destruction was enormous. Particularly affected buildings, built in the 60-70s years of the 20th century. In Leninakan was destroyed about one-third of industrial enterprises were destroyed entire neighborhoods of apartment 9-storey buildings. In Spitak almost no whole building, the whole city was in ruins.
