Modern or the New English language is a dynamic system of lexical units, which consist of native and borrowed words. Due to the etymological analysis of words we can trace the origination of the word. There is a category of etymological and cultural markers helping to understand the source of origin and different process inside the word structure, such as phonetic (expressed with vowels and consonant combinations in the word) or morphological, etc.
In this work I‘ll try to find different etymological and culturological markers in the text fragments from the novel "Ivanhoe", written by W. Scott.
The object of my research is English language.
The subject of my work is etymological and culturological markers in English language...
Etymological marker is a category, which allows tracing the source of origin of this word. We can determinate some types of etymological markers and also culturological markers:
1. General linguistic etymological marker is based on the knowledge of cognate languages. As English language has a proto-Germanic basement, comparing English words with identical words in Old Norse or Old Frisian language, for example, reveals common general linguistic marker.
2. Graphical marker is connected with letters, spelling devices and rules.
3. Phonetic marker expresses phonetic changes, such as reduction, assimilation or palatalization. It can be expressed with sounds or stress.
...
Работа написана на английском языке и содержит теоретическую часть по этимологическим маркерам в английском языке и практическую с примерами. Оценка: отлично.
