The short story “The Thing You Want” written by Jack Trammell tells us about a young Private, who encounters a beautiful girl and it changes something inside him. Jack Trammell is a 36-year-old American writer and teacher. He takes interest in the American Civil War, that is why he has published numerous articles in the nonfiction magazine "America's Civil War" and now is working on a new Civil War novel.
The text represents Belles Letters style, the narration is done in the third person. The story includes elements of description (The grass was so high in the yard around it that…), dialogue (“Leave her alone!” – “Get out of here”) and represented speech. The theme of the story is the war. The idea is expressed explicitly in one of the paragraphs and lies in the fact that there is nothing good about the war, it is not worth suffering and nobody deserves what they get during the war.
