FROM THE HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT OF BRITISH FLEET
One of the most ancient traditions of the British is to preserve their ships as monuments. The habit began in 1580, when Sir Francis Drake, the first Englishman who sailed round the world, returned to England. His ship, “The Golden Hind” became the first monument of such a type. The place where the ship was laid up was Deptford – a naval dockyard. Today the “Golden Hind” can be seen near the pier at Essex.
Another famous ship, “Victory”, Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) is in the world’s oldest dry dock, near the harbour at Portsmouth. In 1965 the ship celebrated her 200th anniversary, for this well known three-decker of 100 guns was launched at Chatham, Kent. Now this ship is a kind of museum, it is open to visitors daily. Everybody can see the traces of war at the time of Trafalgar. Once the ship served as a prison. Yet, it was the best sailing ship of its type, despite its age. Captain Nelson used it as a flagship.
In Greenwich stands the magnificent 17th century Royal Naval College and one of the most popular National maritime Museums. It is clear therefore, that Greenwich pier should be the last home of one of the most graceful sailing ships ever built. “The Cutty Shark” was possibly the fastest sailing ship of her size (963 tons and 17 knots).
