AZOV
As early as in the ancient times people settled the lands to the north of the Black Sea because of fertile grassland and warm climate. Two thousand years ago the Greek founded there the town of Tanais to belong in future to various tribes: the Sarmatians, Hunnes, Khazars, Pachenegs, and Kumans. The nomads presented great danger to any state the borders of which they chose to approach. In IX-X centuries, they raided Russian principalities constantly. In X-XI centuries, the lands around the mouth of the Don belonged to the Russian principality of Tmutarakan. In the late XI century, the Kumans took its territory. The number of their camps increased, they grew bigger to turn into towns eventually. Azov became one of them in 1067.
