South Ural State University
The Mechanical-Machine Building Institute was opened in Chelyabinsk in December 1943. It was formed on the basis of Chelyabinsk and Leningrad Tractor Plants. At that time there were only two faculties there: the Mechanical-Technological Faculty and the Automobile and Tractor Faculty. Only four hundred and twenty five students studied at the Institute in 1943. In 1951 the ChMMI was named the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute. In 1990 it was reorganized into the technical university and was called the Chelyabinsk State Technical University.
Now it is named South Ural State University. At present SUSU is one of the largest universities in Russia and it is housed in 9 modern buildings. About 50000 students and post-graduates study at its day-time faculties, as well as at the evening and correspondence departments. The teaching staff numbers about 3000 instructors. Several Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences, about 225 Doctor of Sciences, Professors, 800 Candidates of Sciences and a great number of Assistant Professors work there. The university has 33 faculties, 13 branches and 8 regional campuses which train engineers in 70 specialities.
The university provides a good engineering education. It should be noted, that the university trains not only engineers, but specialists in economics, finance, architecture, ecology, management, foreign languages. SUSU is a basic educational institution of Russian Ministry of Education on developing new teaching methods, and introduction of new study equipment. Our university has facility to train qualified specialists. Technical teaching aids help to improve teaching. There are many lecture halls with modern automatic teaching systems and telecomplexes designed by the scientists of the university.
The laboratories for practical classes are supplied with modern devices, machines and systems. The students take tests exams in specialized classrooms supplied with automatic control systems. The university has the large library with several reading halls. It has more than two and a half million volumes, journals and periodicals. SUSU is a large research center. Most of the students carry out research at the Student Research Center. At present there function about 30 research laboratories here. The scientists and post-graduates solve a great number of theoretical and practical problems in various fields of industry, science and technology.
The scientists of the university take part in the International Conferences and Symposia. About 6,500 students live in the university hostel. The university has a modern sport complex with a swimming pool. Since 1956 university newspaper "Technopolis" has been published. In 2002 the first teleradiocentre was opened. By 2004 the university has trained over 250000 specialists. They work in different branches of industry all over the country and abroad. SUSU has developed for many years as a large regional University. However, in view of the Bologna process and the reforming of the higher education system of Russia, the main aims of the University now include an active integration with European universities; the development and realization of joint academic, scientific and innovation programmes; the provision of teachers and students mobility; the introduction of an effective system of education quality control.
