Robert Falcon Scott – Hero of the Antarctic 1910-1912
Robert Scott was a captain in the Royal Navy and Antarctic explorer. He lived during the heroic age of Antarctic exploration and became the second to reach the South Pole. The Norwegian Roald Amundsen was the first to do that.
Robert Falcon Scott was born in June of 1868 in England. At the age of 13 he joined special training to become a Royal Naval officer with profound knowledge in engineering. In 1901 Scott commanded the National Antarctic Expedition which was organized by the Royal Geographical Society. During the expedition Scott’s party explored the Ross Sea, discovered the land on the east of the ice sea and named it “King Edward VII Land”. Also they discovered the Polar Plateau and traveled as far south as nobody had done before them. It was here that the party discovered an emperor penguin breeding colony and took photographs.
After this interesting experience Scott became greatly interested in the scientific endeavor in the South Pole. With an idea of setting a new expedition he started preparation and fundraising. He developed a special program of observations. Geological, geographical, meteorological and zoological studies had to be conducted during the expedition.
He set out on a journey on his ship Terra Nova and left England in July of 1910. Upon arrival at Ross Land he set up his base camp. From there Scott and four other men set out on a journey to the Pole. Notwithstanding difficulties and blizzards, Scott and his party reached the South Pole on January 17-18, 1912. They gathered rock samples and on the way back they conducted scientific observations of the region. However the way back was especially hard and they suffered a lot from injuries, frostbite, shortage of fuel, malnutrition, and exhaustion. The whole group perished, while the nearest station was only eleven kilometers away.
