Strange, but the fact that English, which is one of the most developed languages in the world, contains a huge number of words of foreign origin. The explanation for this can be found in the history of the language, which is closely related to the history of the national language.
As in any other language, English has borrowings. It coexists with words from Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and many other languages.
The English language contains a large number of very high-frequency primordial Germanic words: these are, for example, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliary verbs, and words denoting objects and concepts of everyday life (child, water, come, good, bad). In addition, the grammatical structure, essentially German, remained untouched by foreign influence.
English in the early middle Ages took a large number of borrowings from the Scandinavian. The most massive stream of borrowings is medieval, after the Norman conquest, from the old French language; as a result, almost half of the English dictionary has Romanesque roots. In Modern times, the language includes a large number of scholars of Latinism and new borrowings from continental languages.
The purpose of this work is to identify how the process of borrowing from a particular language took place, and what were the prerequisites for this.
Relevance: there are two main directions of its characteristics.
The first is due to the lack of knowledge of the selected topic. In this case, the study is relevant precisely because certain aspects of the topic have not been fully studied and the study is aimed at overcoming this gap.
The second direction of the characteristic of relevance is connected with the possibility of solving a certain practical problem on the basis of the data obtained in the study.
The study of the origin of words occupies a prominent place in the General system of English language teaching. When explaining difficult words, it is necessary to take into account the laws, historical processes that led to the origin of the word. Even in pre-revolutionary school in primary school when explaining orthograms, which were difficult for students, teachers turned to the information on etymology.
For example, the rule on spelling of vowels that are not checked by stress needs scientific justification. The school textbook does not explain their spelling, is limited to the advice of the proposed list of words, which causes significant difficulties for students, first, because of their large number, because even I. Komensky cited one of the principles of successful learning:" No one will be burdened with an excessive amount of material to be studied", and etymological analysis allows to narrow the range of words for learning, and secondly, it is known that mechanical memorization without understanding and comprehension is the most difficult form of obtaining knowledge. Such training is not interesting.
Thus, etymological analysis of the word supports and develops interest in the Russian language, has a positive effect on the development of students ' speech, thinking, imagination, memory, attention.
The purpose and content of the tasks: to identify how the process of borrowing from a particular language, and what were the prerequisites for this.
