The concept of attributivity is the relationship between the categories of substance and attribute. It can be expressed explicitly and implicitly.
Attributive collocations are represented by constructions with different semantics and structures. Attributive word combinations as a special type of word combinations are heterogeneous in their composition. They are represented by a variety of structures. The main component is a noun; the dependent component may be represented by different parts of speech: an adjective, a pronoun, a numeral, a particle and a noun. This variety of constructions makes it necessary to identify criteria for classifying these collocations as attributive.
Thus, the relevance of the work is determined by the interest of various linguists to such phenomenon as attributive word combinations constitute a specific microsystem of syntactic units in English.
The objective of this course work is a comprehensive study and systematic description of the Attribute phrases in the English language.
The following tasks can be formulated here:
- to clarify the concept of the Attribute phrases as a part of speech.
- to consider structural characteristics of attribute phrases.
-to study the main functions of the Attribute phrases.
- to analyze the use of the attribute phrases in the Books «Mythos”, «Heroes» by Steven Fry).
An attributive construction – is a definition made up of several elements, nouns in a common case and adjectives, sometimes a whole phraseological unity or even whole sentence. They are often found in socio-political and scientific and technical political texts. Construction of this kind have been and are the subject of research by many Russian scholars (V.V.Vinogradov, V.L.Syxotin, C.G. Terminasova).
Attributive word combinations arose in language because of the need to distinguish an object from other similar objects by naming and or indicating its specific characteristics. These attributes can be of many kinds, either externally or internally. For example, signs denoting belonging {Voronezh Province "Voronezh Province"; German tanks "German tanks"; the Poznan camp "Poznan camp", German soil "German soil", etc.); externalities {little eyebrows "small eyebrows"; big hands "big hands"; dark hands "dark hands", firm lips "firm lips", big face. The following are some of the features: inner qualities, character traits {a rotten type "rotten type", good-tempered chap "humble guy", etc.); ethnicity {German majot "German major"; Russian soldier "Russian soldier"), features describing the subject's relationship to space or time, etc. [1, p. 83]
The formal organisation of attributive word combinations is represented by the combination of a noun as the main component and an adjective, a participle, a pronoun, or an ordinal as the dependent component. In the linear arrangement of the attributive word combination components, the preposition of the prunatic and the postposition of its host are the benchmark.
Based on the understanding of the word combination as a grammatically organized group considered in terms of combinatorics of word classes and subclasses, their forms, as well as their arrangement in relation to each other, we have distinguished attributive word combinations. The distinctive feature of this type of collocations is the close connection between its components, which express a single, though fragmented, concept or representation.
