Medical terminology is language that is used to accurately describe the human body and associated components, conditions, processes and procedures in a science-based manner.
Like much scientific terminology, medical terms are largely derivations of either Greek or Latin languages, after all they were the founders of modern medicine. Hence, medical terminology is common to most European languages.
Medical terms are typically comprised of word parts that are either entirely Latin or entirely Greek in origin. Both languages rarely intermingle to form a given term. It results in struggling with the terminology used in various translations from earlier Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic works.
Grasping medical terminology starts with knowing the body’s systems, recognizing medical root words commonly used, understanding the other languages influence in medical terminology, and learning medical words.
Decoding the medical term is an important process and it is clear that doctors and nurses are not the only ones who need to understand medical terminology. In this work the forming of the medical terminology is explained.
Introduction
1. Origin of medical terminology
2. General lexical structure
2.1. Word root
2.2. Prefix
2.3. Suffix
2.4. Acronyms

The process of learning any new language, such as medical terminology, is facilitated by learning basic rules.
To the untrained eye, medical terms may often seem to be the same. But the smallest of differences can make a big difference in reimbursement.
The approach involves breaking down the word by evaluating the meaning of the suffix first, then prefix, and finally the word root. This will generally produce a good result for the experienced health care professional. When in doubt, the result should be verified by a medical terminology dictionary.
Medical terminology can be confusing, but after learning the common prefixes and suffixes, it is easy to deduce the meaning of medical terms.
