LISE MEITNER1 (1878-1968)
1. In 1938, an Austrian physicist named Lise Meitner announced the splitting of the atom in the laboratory. That announcement confirmed once again the beginning of the Atomic Age. At that time Lise Meitner was one of the few persons in the world who had a thorough understanding of atomic energy and the uses which could be made of this great power.
2. Lise Meitner, the daughter of a lawyer, was born in Vienna on the 17th of November 1878. She grew interested in science when she read of the Curies’ discovery of radium. The example of Marie Curie showed that a woman was able to achieve something in science. Lise Meitner became the first woman in the history of the University of Vienna who earned her doctorate2 in physics.
3. In 1906 she went to the University of Berlin to continue her studies by attending the theoretical lectures of Max Planck and by doing experimental work. Then she began her research in the new field of radioactivity. She focused her attention on the behaviour of beta radiation fr om radioactive elements, experimenting with the primitive methods then available3 for measuring and analysing radioactivity. Meitner’s work in the 1920s and early 1930s emphasized the physical aspects of radioactivity.
4. In 1938 she left Germany for Sweden. Lise Meitner declined to work on the development of the atom bomb remaining in Sweden throughout the war. She was concerned with the properties of new radioactive isotopes, produced by the cyclotron. Her career was illustrious4 and productive5 (she published more than 135 scientific papers), but throughout her life she remained a shy person, with a deep interest in music. Her devotion to science had been total. She never married. In I960 she moved to Cambridge, England, wh ere she died in 1968.

ENUM is a new registry service that unifies telephone numbers and the Domain Name System (DNS) to simplify the way that VoIP calls work. It allows more VoIP calls to be connected directly over the internet, for no charge, rather than across the traditional PSTN network.
The core principle of ENUM is to translate a telephone number into a domain name. This allows users to carry on using the existing phone number formats they are familiar with, whilst allowing the device to route the call using a DNS lookup. Using the DNS makes ENUM a quick, stable and cheap link between telecommunications systems and the internet.
If you are already a VoIP user, having your telephone numbers in the ENUM database means that you’re advertising to other VoIP users how you would like to be contacted simply by means of your existing telephone number. If all the people you call are VoIP enabled then you will be able to make considerable cost savings if they register their numbets too.
Users register their telephone number as an ENUM and store their VoIP address in a record in their ENUM domain. This effectively enables calls from any ENUM-aware VoIP phone, to access a user over the internet without using the traditional network. Callers simply dial a telephone number in the traditional manner. Their telephone system then performs a look up for the corresponding ENUM and if the query is successful then the call will be routed according to the specific indications set by the user i.e. via VoIP. If the number called is not in the ENUM database, then the call will proceed to the person's traditional telephone via the telephone operators and incur the associated charges.
In addition to your VoIP address, the ENUM record can contain any Univeisal Resource Indicator (URI) including your email address, instant messenger details, mobile number, landline, web address and more. This functionality gives control to users in a new, affordable and accessible way.

1 Transportation is an important aspect in the total tourist industry because it is an essential feature of tourism.
2 During the 19th century railroads spread across Europe, North America and many other parts of the world. They formed the first successful system of mass transportation, carrying a lot of people to such English seaside resorts as Brighton, Margate and Blackpool.
3 Steamships were developed at the same time as railroads. By 1900, they were used for carrying passengers and freight.
4 In the second half of the 20th century the automobile has replaced the railroad for most local travel. It offers convenience.
5 The traveller can depart from his own home and arrive at his destination without transferring luggage or coping with any of the other difficulties. The apparent costs of a trip by automobile are also lower, especially for family groups.
6 A very large percentage of domestic tourism now takes advantage of the automobile for transportation. In Europe, where the distance from one national board to another may be very short, automobiles are also used extensively for international journeys.
7 For long-distance travel, the airplane has replaced the railroad and the ship as the principal carrier. The railroads have suffered on short-distance routes as well as on long-distance routes. Motor buses or coaches as they are called in England have replaced railroad passenger service on many local routes.
8 Ships still play an important part in tourism for the purpose of cruising. A cruise is a
voyage by ship that is made for pleasure rather than to arrive quickly at a fixed destination. The cruise ship acts as the hotel for the passengers as well as their means of transportation. When the tourists reach a port, they are usually conducted on one-day excursions, but they are to return to the ship to eat and to sleep.
9 Ships play another part in modern tourism as car ferries. Particularly in Europe, the tourist who wants to have his car with him on a trip has to take advantage of car ferries across the English Channel or the Strait of Gibraltar.
The airlines are now very prominent in the tourist industry and it is important to remember that there are two kinds of airline operations, scheduled and nonscheduled.
10 A scheduled airline operates on fixed routes at fixed times according to a timetable that is available to the public.
11 A nonscheduled airline operates on routes and at times when there is a demand for the service. The scheduled airlines aim their services primarily at business travellers, at people visiting friends and relatives, and at others who travel alone or in small groups. A scheduled airline flight is usually filled with travellers going to the same destination.
12 As seating capacity increased with the introduction of newer, larger and faster planes, the airlines were able to offer a percentage of their seats for sale through travel agents or tour operators.
13 IT stands for inclusive tour, a travel package that offers both transportation and accommodations, and often entertainment as well.
14 Another important abbreviation in tourism is CIT, charter inclusive tour is one that uses a charter plane for transportation. Charter plane is an aircraft that has been rented to fly when and where the service is necessary. Charter inclusive tours are sold at even lower fares than the inclusive tours on the scheduled airlines.
