1.1. Fundamentals of decoding

In the first chapter of the paper we examine the theoretical works related to the concept of decoding. More specifically, in this section of the paper the fundamentals of decoding are analyzed.
Traditionally there are considered to be two main directions in the stylistic analysis – analysis from the author’s perspective (encoding stylistics) and analysis from the reader’s perspective (decoding stylistics). Encoding stylistics primarily deals with the point of view that the peculiarities of the author’s style are identified on the basis of comparison with other writers (Malpas, 2013p.?).
Encoding stylistics includes the following elements:
• The critical investigation of the author’s style;
• The critical investigation of the vocabulary used by the author.
In this case, most of the attention is paid to the author’s ideas related to the work in general and his own work in particular. Here ideas can be taken from articles, diaries, letters, etc.
...

1.2. Main concepts of decoding stylistic analysis

In this section of the paper the main concepts of the stylistics of decoding are specified. More specifically, we defined here the concept of decoding, as well as its main features.
M. Raffatterre identified decoding stylistics as the science that investigates those features “of the linguistic utterance which are utilized to impose the encoder’s way of thinking of the decoder” (Wynne, 2005p.?).
The linguist believes that every language system can be classified in accordance with expressive and descriptive means. Moreover, taking into consideration the fact that traditional stylistics studies only relevant elements, in decoding stylistics elements are studied against micro ad macro context. The interdependence of these elements is crucial, because the verbal strategy is primarily based on surprise ad something unexpected.
...

2.1. Types of foregrounding in stylistics of decoding

In the second chapter of the paper the practical analysis of stylistics of decoding is conducted. In this section we specify the types of foregrounding in stylistics of decoding ad provide corresponding examples.
Foregrounding is considered to be one of the most significant concepts of decoding stylistics. The essence of this concept is presented as follows. Foregrounding can be defined as a specific role that some language elements have in a specific context where the attention of the reader cannot be draw to the element. In a text such elements become stylistically marked featured that have certain stylistic function. The effect of foregrounding can be achieved by multiple strategies. More specifically, it may be based on different types of redundancy, deviation, unexpected combination of language units, etc. (Stylistics of the English language).
...

2.2. Practical analysis of the use of types foregrounding in decoding stylistics

In this section of the paper we conduct practical analysis of the use of different types of foregrounding in decoding stylistics.
For this purpose we chose(too obvious it is not “we”, but Widdowson, 2004.?)the following passage from the literary text written by Amor Towles “Rules of Civility”: (Reference)
Eve Ross . . .
Eve was one of those surprising beauties from the American Midwest.
In New York it becomes so easy to assume that the city’s most alluring women have flown in from Paris or Milan. But they’re just a minority. A much larger covey hails from the stalwart states that begin with the letter I—like Iowa and Indiana and Illinois. Bred with just the right amount of fresh air, roughhousing, and ignorance, these primitive blondes set out from the cornfields looking like starlight with limbs.
...

Conclusion

Decoding stylistics is the stylistics from the reader’s perspective.The concept of decoding deals with the understanding of the fact that literary text can be viewed as a poetic structure. In general, literary text is described to have verbal and supraverbal layers. Poetic structure of a literary text, in particular its supraverbal layer, involves the following entitles:
• Image,
• Theme,
• Idea,
• Composition,
• Genre.
Decoding stylistics investigates the following levels of a literary text:
• Phonetic level;
• Graphical level;
• Lexical level;
• Grammatical level.
Expressive means and stylistic devices together have the function of creation of an effect, image or specific mood.
In the second chapter of the paper the practical analysis of stylistics of decoding is conducted.
