Introduction
Nowadays in the age of globalization, there is an increasing necessity for full understanding of impotency of intercultural contacts which are the result of global marketing. Business communication is one of the most significant components of every successful business as a device of interacting two or more persons, companies, organizations and so forth. The need of adequate communication between both sides results in the existence of style of business communication. It is a well-known fact that globalization makes the English language lead in case of intercultural communication; therefore, lots of correspondence is written in English as well as business meetings has the same unique business-language. If a person does not know foundation, features and corresponding characteristic properties of business English, he or she is unable to lead a communication with an opponent and cannot be a business-partner. Consequently, we can speak about the importance of knowledge of business letters style as one of the way to successful business.
As the influence of the Internet increases, business correspondence is becoming more and more dependent on it, for example, lots of files are sent via the Internet every day. However, even if we do not take it into account the importance of business communication via the Internet, we should still remember about printed business documentation and correspondence which provides the necessity of in-depth study of formal English This is especially important in business letters where a negligible error can lead to a miserable failure. In other words, it is significant to know the right formula for communicating and creating a business letter which is stylistically correct in English and sometimes is worth more than all the planes, equipment and business skills one can demonstrate.
Considering that, the goal of the term paper is to study the style of the business letter as a part of formal English.
To attain the target, we set the following objectives:
1) to discuss performance of the business letter;
2) to examine functional, structural and stylistic peculiarities of the business letter;
3) to look into different types of the business letter;
4) to analise specific types of the business letter.
The object of the term paper is the formal style of business English and the subject is the business letter.
It is the top priority of this research to analyse the business letter as a linguistic phenomenon. As a result, to attain the target, we have studied a row of the available sources concerning the theoretical aspects of this question. Conclusion
As a result of the term paper, performance of the business letter was discussed and functional, structural and stylistic peculiarities of the business letter were examined. Additionally, two different types of the business letter were fully analyzed which enables us to arrive at the following conclusions.
In the business letter we write in informal style about work, business or official subjects. As any other type of communication, the business letter is based on the needs and wishes of the writer which are supposed to be received by the means of the addressee and his available data. Different types of business letter are distinguished, for example, letter of enquiry, application, complaint, regret or so-called thank you letter.
In contrast to an oral communication, the business letter efforts an opportunity to create arranged communicative act presented in a written form that has its advantages and disadvantages as well.
Even if the types of the business letter has their own formats (or methods), we can separate out the mostly common contents which normally includes date, name of the sender, contact details, name of the addressee, address, subject line, salutation (greeting), body of the letter, closing the letter, valediction. As for indentation formats, the business letters conform to generally one of six indentation formats: Standard, Open, Block, Semi-Block, Modified Block, and Modified Semi-Block. The Block and Modified Block styles are most popular in those sectors where the organizations and persons communicate.
There exist a row of rules and advice concerting finding a better style and organization of the business letter, for example, “Golden Rules” proposed by L. Jones and R. Alexander and John Trimble’s “The Seven Nevers” which are considered by a number of linguists as archaic and rather questionable.
To stay in the register and style of the business letter the writer uses some specially chosen lexicon by employing certain words in formal occasions and means of morphology. The second variant can be illustrated with the usу of special verb forms for polite discourse, for example, such modal verbs as would, should, could. The use of the colloquial language is strictly prohibited, however, that does not mean that long and complicated phrases are preferable. On the contrary, the letter should be written in adequate language.
As well as lexical and morphological means the polite formulas are used coupled with a clear reason of writing and paragraph division. Moreover, due to the style of the business letter several trite formal expressions should be used as greeting, reasoning for writing, enclosure, contact and closing.
Analysis of the enquiry and asking business letter has helped to create a full understanding of the structure, function and stylistic peculiarities of the business letter.
